Hidden Pastures offers private Western riding and horsemanship lessons tailored to each rider’s experience, comfort level, and goals.
Students learn more than how to ride. Lessons combine mounted instruction with grooming, groundwork, horse care, communication, safety, and the practical skills needed to become more confident and capable around horses.
Beginners are welcome, and adults are encouraged to ride too.

Learn the Horse, Not Just the Saddle
Riding is only one part of becoming a capable horse person.
Depending on the rider’s experience and goals, lessons may include:
- Grooming
- Tacking
- Horse care
- Groundwork

- Safe handling
- Understanding horse behavior
- Balance
- Steering
- Stopping
- Riding position

- Western riding skills
Not every lesson will spend the full 50 minutes mounted.
That is intentional.
Complete horsemanship includes what happens before, during, and after the ride.
Lessons Built Around the Rider
Every rider begins in a different place.
Private lessons allow instruction to be tailored to the rider’s:

Some riders may be getting on a horse for the first time.
Others may be working on balance, control, communication, confidence, or stronger horsemanship skills.
The lesson progresses based on the individual rider rather than a group curriculum.

Mounted instruction focuses on foundational Western riding skills.
Depending on experience level, riders may work on:
- Mounting and dismounting
- Balance and body position

- Using appropriate cues
- Riding independently
- Maintaining control
- Developing clearer communication with the horse
- Building stronger foundational skills over time
Instruction progresses as the rider becomes ready for additional skills.
Horsemanship Starts on the Ground
Students also learn how to work safely and appropriately around horses before they ever enter the saddle.
Horsemanship may include:
- Grooming
- Leading
- Groundwork
- Tacking
- Horse-care routines
- Safe positioning around horses
- Understanding equine body language
- Appropriate boundaries
- Responsibility for the horse before and after riding
These skills help riders understand the horse as a living animal rather than simply something to ride.
Confidence Comes From Learning How
Working with horses requires practice, awareness, patience, communication, and responsibility.
Riders build confidence by learning real skills and discovering what they can do through experience.
That may mean learning how to safely lead a horse, completing grooming independently, improving balance in the saddle, steering with greater control, or successfully completing something that once felt difficult.
Confidence grows through competence.

Which Horse Experience Is Right for You?
Horsemanship & Riding Lessons
Choose riding lessons when the primary goal is learning Western riding, horse care, and horsemanship skills.
Private Equine-Assisted Learning & Wellbeing Sessions
Choose private wellbeing sessions when the primary goal is an individualized experiential setting focused on areas such as confidence, communication, regulation, boundaries, problem-solving, or navigating life experiences.
Riding is not the primary focus of Private Equine-Assisted Learning & Wellbeing Sessions.
Come Ready to Ride
Riding lessons take place on a real working farm and around full-size horses. Riders should arrive prepared for outdoor conditions and dressed appropriately for safe participation.
Please wear:
- A properly fitted riding helmet — helmets are required for all riders during mounted activities
- Closed-toe shoes or boots — required for working around and riding horses
- Long pants — recommended for comfort and protection while riding
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that allows you to move easily
Lessons may take place in heat, cold, wind, dust, mud, or other changing farm conditions, so please dress with the weather in mind.
Safety comes first. Riders who arrive without the required helmet or closed-toe footwear may not be able to participate in mounted activities.
