Our Story

Hidden Pastures was founded by two veterans who understood what it meant to rebuild.

Allie McCutcheon, a U.S. Army veteran, and Brian Heid, a U.S. Marine veteran, came into this chapter of life carrying the weight of military service, demanding careers, and difficult first marriages. They were capable and committed — but deeply aware of how constant pressure can wear a person down.

What they needed wasn’t another program.
They needed something steady.

The land became that place.

Caring for animals. Repairing fences. Feeding before sunrise. Shared work without performance or pressure. The rhythm of farm life replaced urgency with structure and responsibility. Over time, that steadiness rebuilt confidence and clarity.

Hidden Pastures grew from that lived experience.

It was never meant to be a clinic or a retreat. It was built as a working farm — a place where people can show up, participate, and engage in meaningful tasks alongside others.

Today, Hidden Pastures operates as a nonprofit offering structured, hands-on farm programs for youth, veterans, and families.

The mission is simple:
Provide a steady place where people can engage in real work, build practical skills, and experience the grounding presence of land, animals, and shared responsibility.

Our Mission

Hidden Pastures exists to create accessible, grounded farm experiences where people can connect with animals, the land, and one another in meaningful ways.

We believe:

  • people connect differently — some through horses, others through caring for animals, working with their hands, or being outdoors
  • growth happens through participation, not performance
  • structure, rhythm, and shared work support structure, rhythm, and shared work support confidence, responsibility, and practical skills

Our programs meet people where they are and offer clear, supportive ways to engage with the farm.

As a nonprofit organization, we work to ensure cost is not a barrier and that access remains available to those who need it most through the Hidden Pastures Access Fund.

We are not broken — and neither are you.

Hidden Pastures grew from lived experience and a deep belief that people don’t need fixing — they benefit from steady environments, supportive structure, and meaningful experiences.

This land isn’t just a farm. It’s a place to slow down, feel grounded, and reconnect with simple, steady rhythms of life.

It’s not the horse that does the work. Through animals, land, and real experience, we build skills, perspective, and confidence that carry into everyday life.

What We Believe

We believe that steady environments and clear structure create the conditions for learning and meaningful connection.

When people experience calm, predictable settings, they are better able to focus, participate, and engage with others in everyday life. Without structure and steadiness, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming.

Life on a farm naturally supports this rhythm. Animals respond to consistent presence. The land offers routine and responsibility. Shared work creates purpose without pressure.

Across cultures and generations, connection to land has supported responsibility, cooperation, and practical skill-building. Hidden Pastures offers a place where that steadiness can be practiced through presence, participation, and time.

Our Vision

We envision a community where people have access to steady, structured environments and meaningful shared experiences, elements that are often missing in daily life.

At Hidden Pastures, this comes through time on the land, connection with animals, and participation in real farm tasks. These experiences support focus, confidence, and practical engagement with others.

Our vision is not to fix people, but to provide a place where structure, connection, and skill-building are accessible — naturally and at each person’s own pace.

Our Approach

Hidden Pastures is guided by two simple principles:

Grounded, Guided Support

We provide clear structure, predictable rhythm, and practical guidance. Programs are intentionally paced and rooted in real farm tasks and hands-on learning.

Learning Through Relationship

Horses and other animals are not tools or healers. They are living beings who invite responsibility, awareness, and authentic interaction through their presence.

Why Hidden Pastures Exists

Hidden Pastures was created because many people are looking for something steady, practical, and real in a fast-moving world.

Here, connection happens through shared work, hands-on tasks, and time alongside animals — not through pressure or performance.

It’s not about fixing what’s wrong.
It’s about offering space to participate, contribute, and build confidence through meaningful work.

One breath, one hoofbeat, one step at a time — this is the rhythm of steady progress
