Where Animals Heal and Hearts Flourish

Welcome to Hidden Pastures, a sanctuary that emerged from humble beginnings at a small kitchen table during the challenging year of COVID-19.

As a blended family of six, we were navigating the early stages while carrying the weight of past traumas and grappling with major medical events, all against the backdrop of a world in chaos. Little did we know that a decision to hatch some chickens would forever change our lives.

However, it was not COVID-19 that left the deepest mark on our family; it was the year 2018 that will forever be etched in our memories. We were labeled as Victims of a Violent Crime, a title that still sends shivers down my spine as I write it. The impact of trauma was far greater than we had anticipated, despite our prior experience in the military (Marines, Army). We found ourselves confronted with new labels: CPTSD, Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Depression amongst others

In our quest to provide the best resources for healing, we encountered numerous flawed systems – healthcare, mental health, school districts, judicial, law enforcement – each with its own shortcomings. Determined to ensure that these labels would not define our girls, we tirelessly searched for solutions. Our journey led us to Equest in Dallas, where equine therapy provided the first stepping stones towards healing.

Then, amidst the chaos of 2020, we found solace in the simple joy of observing six little Rhode Island Red chickens running freely in our backyard. It was a transformative moment when, for the first time in two years, genuine smiles adorned our faces and we felt a deep sense of connection. With no distractions, the presence of these birds allowed us the space to process our thoughts and emotions.

Hidden Pastures was born from that profound experience. Our mission is to offer others the grounding effect that animals and nature have on the human spirit. We aspire to create a sanctuary where individuals can find solace, healing, and a renewed sense of connection. Join us on this journey as we discover the transformative power of animals and nature, and provide a space for others to embark on their own path to recovery.
